Residents in Harborne Street, Wembley were rudely greeted by a tipper Truck in their back garden earlier today, after it rolled off a building site, crossed a rear laneway, and careered straight through their rear garage door.
An emergency called was logged with FESA which resulted in the local State Emergency Service unit being activated around midday.
Nick Elliott, Deputy Local Manager of Northshore SES said "We initially despatched a single man team to the incident site to carry out a review of what resources would be required. A six man crew from Northshore was then activated, backed up by two FESA SES District Managers from Belmont. We understand that a large truck was about to tip its load of sand onto a building site, when the truck started to roll. The driver tried in vain to stop the vehicle, which then crossed a laneway a crashed into the garage."
"Our rescue team was on site for over two hours making the area safe and removing debris. The garage sustained significant structural damage which required the roof to be propped. Once the roof had been secured, the roller door and front wall of the garage was removed by SES volunteers. Part of the side wall of the garage was also removed as it was structurally unsafe and presented too great a hazard to be left standing".
The driver of the truck thankfully sustained no injuries but was at a loss as to exactly what had happened. The truck itself sustained minor damage to panels and side mirrors.
Nick added "Today was a perfect reminder that you just never know how you day is going to turn out. Thankfully nobody was walking down the laneway as the truck rolled across, with the only damage being to property and vehicles. It could have been much worse."
