Cottesloe flare fire
29-09-2009

Northshore called in to prevent further home damage

Monday September 28, 2009
FESA State Emergency Service volunteers (Northshore SES) were mobilised this morning to help at the scene of a house fire, just one street back from the coastal strip "Marine Terrace" in Cottesloe.

A FESA Fire & Rescue spokesman said the fire started at about 9.30pm Saturday night, on Avonmore Terrace, with crews from Claremont, Fremantle and Osborne Park being called upon to bring it under control.

Police spokeswoman said the owners of the house were not home at the time of the fire, but one woman in the house at the time, believed to be a nanny, was uninjured.

FESA State Emergency Service (SES) spokesman said that the fire caused extensive damage to the ceiling and roof of the house, and that the SES had been called in to cover the damaged roof area with a tarpaulin to ensure the house was as waterproof as possible. A five man crew were on site at 9am on Monday to deal with the situation.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined. However the house was suspected to be the latest casualty of flare-attack, where homes and property are suspected of being set ablaze with the use of boat flares.

Arson Squad detectives were investigating the cause of a fire.
